November Hiker Activity – Stink-o-Lantern Patch
November Hiker Activity Stink-o-Lantern Patch/Nature Detective Instructions: 1) Form a semi-circle around the stink-o-lantern patch.
2) Use the paper provided to sketch observations. Instruct students to include a stink-o-meter on their sketch (see below). 3) Children may want to date their sketch for comparison to later sketches. The stink-o-lantern patch will be revisited later in the school year. 4) Feel free to replenish bird feeders & sharecrows if time allows. There is plenty of food available in the shed. NEW AS OF NOVEMBER 2011 – The Habitat section of the library has a great new book thanks to Mr. Martin: Pumpkin Jack by Will Hubbell. Stop in the library before your hike if you’d like to read this book to the class. It’s a fantastic fit! Nature Detectives: Mission Test your skills as a nature detective. How many of these things can you find? You may work alone or in groups of two or three. Write down your answers in the empty space. Speed doesn't matter...what matters is how observant you are!!!!! REMEMBER NOT TO COLLECT ANYTHING!! Draw a picture or write down your answer. Leave nature in its place. l. Find something wet. 2. Look for something that is moving fast. 3. Find something green. 4. Find something that has branches but no leaves. 5. Find some thing hard. 6, Find something brown. 7. Look for something orange. 8. Find something that could float. 9. Find something pointy. 10. Look for something with cracks. 11. Listen for something noisy. 12. Find something with a strong smell. ructions: Form a semi-circle around the stink-o-lantern patch. Spend a few moments discussing student observations. How have the stink-o-lanterns changed since Halloween? Have any animals nibbled on them? Moved them? How do they smell? Are they squishy or hard (use a stick)? Have they changed color? What else do you see? Use the paper provided to sketch observations.
